Due to a chance of rain in St. Louis today, Game 6 of the 2011 World Series has been delayed for one day to hope for better. While one day might not seem like a lot of time to delay an MLB game, it really is. Giving an extra day's rest to the teams' pitching staff can cause for a big change in the game plan. The Cardinals are taking advantage of the delay and have decided to start Chris Carpenter after three days of rest after pitching 101 pitches in game 5 in Arlington. without the extra day's rest provided by the delay, Carpenter would not be pitching until Game 7 (if it was even necessary). Having Carpenter would greatly help the Cardinals chance of staying in the series.

The strange thing about the delay is that it is not common for the MLB to postpone games because of possible weather problems. The teams are usually on a tight schedule during the regular season, so the game will only be delayed or postponed if weather actually causes problem during the game (or right before). So it makes sense that the MLB would stick to this idea even when the schedule does not require games to be cancelled on the spot. If pitchers are going to just get extra days of rest between series games, why not just space games out enough to let both teams put their best pitchers out every game? Part of what makes teams great is the depth of their pitching staff, which won't matter if the best pitchers get game time always. However, all of this may not help the Cardinals in the end. The last time Carpenter pitched with three days rest he was eaten up by the Phillies. Tune in on Thursday to see the outcome.
